Oct. 19, 2012
URBANA, Ill. - Fighting Illini senior Rachael White and sophomore Melissa Kopinski teamed up to advance to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Friday night at Atkins Tennis Center. Junior duo Allison Falkin and Misia Kedzierski claimed a win as well but exited the tournament with a loss in the second round.
"Rachael and Melissa played pretty flawlessly and had outstanding energy, considering that it was the last match of the day," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Allison and Misia showed some very good promise as a doubles pair and impressed me greatly despite losing to a tough Michigan opponent in the second round."
Falkin and Kedzierski got the Illini off to a strong start in doubles play with an 8-6 win over Cleveland State's Nicole Janek and Alex Power in first-round action. In round two, the pair fell to fifth-seeded Emina Bektas and Mimi Nguyen of Michigan.
Second-seeded White and Kopinski, who received a round-one bye, managed to get the Orange and Blue back on track with a convincing 8-2 victory over Sephora Boulbahaiem and Merritt Whitley of Eastern Illinois, earning the tandem a spot in Saturday's round of 16.
Freshman Audrey O'Connor and sophomore Julia Jamieson also took the doubles court but came up short in an 8-5 decision against Youngstown State's Marta Burak and Margarita Sadovnikova. Kedzierski and O'Connor each stumbled in the final qualifying singles round, just missing the main singles draw.
"With each match Julia and Audrey play, you see them grow in regards to better decision-making and belief in themselves," Dasso said.
The Illini will return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT with one round of doubles, followed by the first two rounds of the main singles draw, which will feature Falkin, White and Kopinski.
