Three Illini Advance to Round of 16 at Midwest Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Three Illinois women's tennis singles teams and both remaining doubles teams advanced on Day Three of the ITA Midwest Regionals in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday. Alexis Casati, Allison Falkin and Melissa Kopinski advance to Sunday's Round of 16 in singles action. Falkin and Kopinski also advanced to Sunday's doubles quarterfinal round along with Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong.

"I was really happy with today's performance across the board," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Our three freshman continue to impress me in competitive situations which is a great sign for the future of our program. There is a lot of upside and they play with the heart and determination that are upperclassmen are expecting from them. We executed in doubles and Misia and Allison's leadership and energy on the court as seniors are not going unnoticed."

The two remaining Illini doubles teams both advanced after the 8 a.m. doubles Round of 16. Kopinski and Falkin cruised to a second-straight 8-4 win in doubles, topping Notre Dame's Britney Sanders and Molly O'Koniewski. Kedzierski and Kwong advanced with an 8-5 win over Ohio State's Grâinne O'Neill and Miho Kowase. Both Illini pairs advance to Sunday's 9 a.m. CT quarterfinals. If they win, semifinals doubles action starts immediately following the quarterfinals.

In singles, Kopinski and Falkin took advantage of first-round byes and won second-round matchups in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. Kopinski topped Notre Dame's Mary Closs 6-3, 6-3; Falkin beat Wisconsin's Lauren Chyphya 6-2, 6-4.

Casati won two matches to advance, beating Youngstown State's Margarita Sadovnikova 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and Michigan State's Marina Bohrer, who was seeded 9-12 in the tournament, 6-4, 6-4. The singles quarterfinals will take place Sunday after the doubles semifinals are completed. Casati, a freshman, remained unbeaten in singles action as an Illini, improving to 6-0.

Kedzierski lost a three-setter to Western Michigan's Nini Sujashvili 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round, while Jerricka Boone won her first round match 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the first round. Boone fell to Northwestern's Belinda Niu 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
