Two Doubles Teams Advance to Round of 16

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Two Illini doubles tandems advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The doubles Round of 16 and Main Draw singles action begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT. Allison Falkin and Melissa Kopinski took advantage of a bye in the first round a cruised to a win in the second round. Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong won two doubles matches today to advance to tomorrow's Round of 16. Live results are available HERE.

"I was very impressed by the energy level and vocal example our upperclassmen are setting for our three freshman to follow," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "I saw solid execution in doubles play today. I also saw some areas of improvement, but the main thing is I saw growth with each match. We looked stronger as a whole by the end of the day than we did at the beginning, and that's what it's all about."

Kedzierski and Kwong cruised to an opening-round win Detroit's Valery Kulikovskaya and Viktoria Laskutova 8-3. After a short break, the duo cruised to another win, thie time an 8-2 win over Michigan's Amy Zhu and Sara Remynse on their home courts.

Kopinski and Falkin, ranked No. 35 nationally and No. 3 in the tournament, had a bye in the first round. The pair won their second-round matchup against Michigan's Kristen Dodge and Annie Wierda 8-4. Both teams advance to tomorrow's Round of 16, which starts at 8 a.m. CT.

Illini freshmen Alexis Casati and Jerricka Boone dropped their first-round matchup to Ohio State's Gabriella DeSantis and Sandy Niehaus 8-4, but the Illini pair rebounded for an 8-6 win in the backdraw against Irina Slizovskaya and Sujashvili from Detroit. Slizovskaya and Sujashvili were coming off a doubles championship at the Wright State Fall Shootout.

On Thursday, freshman Louise Kwong was the only Illini in action in singles qualifying action. Kwong won her first match 6-0, 5-7, 6-0, before falling in the second round.

Main Draw singles action starts Saturday immediately following the 8 a.m. Round of 16 doubles matchups. Falkin, Kopinski, Boone, Kedzierski and Casati will all play in the Main Draw. Falkin and Kopinski are both seeded 5-8 and receive first-round byes.

Winners of the doubles and singles tournaments advance to the USTA/ITA National Championships in Flushing, N.Y. on Nov. 7-10.
