Illini Wrap Up Impressive Weekend at Ace for a Cure Tournament
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Illinois women's tennis team concluded a successful weekend at the inaugural "Ace for a Cure" tennis tournament hosted by the University of Missouri. In all, the Illini tallied seven wins in doubles and 11 singles victories. The Illini faced competitors from host Missouri, Louisville and Southern Methodist University in the event.
Senior Shivani Davé led all Illini going undefeated in singles and capturing the Pink, Black and Gold 2 bracket championship. In doubles, sophomore Marisa Lambropoulos and freshman Chelcie Abajian dominated the courts as the pair went undefeated in route to the Pink, Black and Gold 1 doubles crown.
"Overall this weekend was a positive experience for our players," Illinois head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Shivani Dave led the way showing the composure of a veteran going undefeated in singles. The duo of Marisa Lambropoulos and Chelcie Abajian also proved that they will be a team to reckon with, winning all three of their doubles matches."
In the consolation brackets, Lambropoulos and freshman Amy Allin both battled their way to the back draw championships. Allin, after dropping her first match in a tight three-setter to Lindsey Jones (LOU), bounced back taking her next two matches, including a 6-2, 6-1 victory Natalia Baez (LOU) in the Pink, Black and Gold 2 consolation championship. Louisville's Bianca Gorbea defeated Lambropoulos in the Pink, Black and Gold Singles 1 consolation championship, 6-1, 6-3.
