CARY, N.C. - University of Illinois senior Rachael White and sophomore Melissa Kopinski kicked off the fall season for the Orange and Blue Friday, going a combined 2-2 on the opening day of the Duke Fab Four Invitational.
"I was impressed by the communication, confidence and composure displayed by Rachael and Melissa in both doubles matches today," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Any win at this tournament is a solid win, and they almost snuck away with two today in doubles."
Kopinski and White got off to a strong start in the first doubles round with an 8-4 win over Texas' Aeriel Ellis and Noel Scott. The Illini tandem stumbled in their second match, however, dropping a 9-7 decision to William & Mary's Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans, the No. 12-ranked duo in the nation.
No. 80 Kopinski rebounded in singles action with a swift 6-0, 6-2 victory over Longhorn Annat Rabinovich. With the win, the 2012 All-Big Ten honoree advances to take on No. 26 Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina. Meanwhile, White came up short against 20th-ranked Ellis, falling 6-3, 6-1. She will face Amber Li (Yale) in a consolation match.
Doubles and singles play continues tomorrow, beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
