URBANA, Ill. - A day after becoming Illinois' first All-Americans in two decades, Fighting Illini senior Rachael White and sophomore Melissa Kopinski ended their NCAA Doubles Championship run in Saturday's quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to second-seeded Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC. The duos battled in the Atkins Tennis Center after rain forced all matches inside.
"I'm just glad that we got as far as we did," Kopinski said. "In the fall, we got to the final eight of the All-American Championships, and so we knew we had to be big at this tournament, too. Trying to get to the final four was kind of heartbreaking, but overall, I couldn't be happier for our accomplishment."
White and Kopinski, the 22nd-ranked duo in the nation, ended the season with a 28-13 record, matching the seventh-most doubles wins in a single season in program history. The duo became the first-ever Illini doubles team to reach the NCAA quarterfinals and first to earn an NCAA Doubles Championship bid since Jennifer McGaffigan and Michelle Webb in 2003.
With their quarterfinal berth, the pair earned All-America status, becoming UI's first All-Americans since Lindsey Nimmo in 1993 and second and third in school history.
White ends her career with an 89-59 doubles mark to rank second in career doubles wins at Illinois. She earned a season-high 28 doubles wins this season, marking her third straight year to pass the 20-win mark.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships continue tomorrow at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. Single-day tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youth. Admission is free for children age two or younger.
