#20 Illini End Tournament Run with 4-0 Loss to #15 Michigan
April 28, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 20th-ranked and third-seeded Fighting Illini women's tennis team (18-7) saw its 2012 Big Ten Tournament run come to a close with a 4-0 loss to 15th-ranked and second-seeded Michigan (19-6) Saturday afternoon at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center. Illinois is 12-2 in its last 14 matches with both losses coming to the Wolverines.
"It was a tight battle," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "We are obviously bummed, but at the same time there is a lot to be proud of about this team and our efforts across the board. We will anxiously wait for our NCAA draw and look forward to making a run in the tournament."
The Orange and Blue dropped the doubles point for the first time in six matches, taking losses on courts one and two to put themselves in an 0-1 hole. The struggles continued in singles play, as all six Illini fell in their first sets. Sophomore Allison Falkin, seniors Marisa Lambropoulos and Chelcie Abajian and junior Rachael White each rallied to win their second sets, but it was not enough for Illinois, which suffered its second shutout of the season.
The Illini will await their fate for the opening round of the NCAA Championships, which will begin May 11 at regional sites. The selections will be announced Tuesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
