Illini Exit Big Ten Tournament with 4-2 Loss to Purdue
April 25, 2014
EVANSTON, Ill. - The fifth-seeded Fighting Illini women's tennis team (14-10) ended its Big Ten Tournament run with a 4-2 loss to fourth-seeded Purdue (12-9) in Friday's quarterfinal match at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Junior Melissa Kopinski captured Illinois' only singles win of the match.
"By winning doubles, we put ourselves in a good position to walk away with the win," said head coach Michelle Dasso. "I feel like we might have let this one slip through our fingers. I am so proud of our girl's efforts."
The Illini came out strong in doubles action, capturing the doubles point handedly. Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong won their match in a swift 8-2, followed closely by Freshmen Jerricka Boone and Alexis Casati with an 8-3 win.
Illinois could not carry the momentum over to singles, with Kopinski finishing first for the Illini's lone singles win. The team went on to drop the incredibly close matches on courts five, one, four, and six, giving the Boilermakers the win for the second year in a row.
The Illini will await their fate for the 2014 NCAA Championships. NCAA.com will reveal the 64-team bracket next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
