Illini Advance to Quarterfinals with 4-0 Win Over Nebraska
April 24, 2014
EVANSTON, Ill. – The fifth-seeded Fighting Illini women’s tennis team (14-9) cruised to a 4-0 victory over 12th-seeded Nebraska (8-17) in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday morning at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. With the win, Illinois advances to Friday’s quarterfinals and will face fourth-seeded Purdue (11-9) tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
“It’s always nice to start out strong and get that doubles point,” said head coach Michelle Dasso. “I think it helps us for tomorrow that we had three singles matches taken care of so quickly. Hopefully it’ll be a little bit warmer but either way we’ll be ready.”
The Illini handedly captured the doubles point, with Allison Falkin and Melissa Kopinski securing a quick 8-4 win early on. Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong were the other match to clinch the win, beating Nebraska’s Hannah Sluz and Lisa Andersson 8-2. Jerricka Boone and Alexis Casati also played, but did not finish.
In singles, the Illini came out strong with a win from Kopinski to start. The momentum continued with a strong win from Boone over Andersson 6-2, 6-1. Casati clinched the sweep for the Illini with a huge 6-0, 6-1 win over Izabella Zgierska, whom Casati had lost to earlier in the season.
The Orange and Blue will return to action tomorrow when they take on No. 4 seeded Purdue at 10 a.m. CT.
