Illini Defeat Nebraska on Senior Day
April 13, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini women’s tennis team split the weekend 1-1, defeating the Nebraska Corn Huskers 4-2 on Sunday afternoon during Senior Day. The Illini tried out a different format for Sunday’s match, where singles was played first. If one team were to clinch the win in singles, doubles would not be played. The Orange and Blue sealed the deal with a win from Jerricka Boone to beat the Huskers, along with wins from both graduating seniors.
“I’m really proud of both Misia and Allison,” said head coach Michelle Dasso. “I appreciate everything they’ve done for our program. Allison is one of the best competitiors and Misia has just improved so much with her net game and her demeanor is just so positive and will be missed. I’m so happy that they went out today with success and we got the ‘W’ for them.”
The Illini started the afternoon off right with a quick win from Melissa Kopinski over Nebraska’s Mary Hanna 6-1, 6-2. Senior Allison Falkin continued to build momentum for the team with a swift 6-2, 6-1 win. Felow senior Misia Kedzierski kept the trend going, beating the Huskers’ Lisa Anderson 6-1, 6-3. The momentum dipped slightly with a 6-4, 6-4 loss from Louise Kwong, and a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss from Alexis Casati. Boone clinched the win for the Illini, taking Hannah Suiz to a third set to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Illini return to action next weekend when they travel to Minnesota and Wisconsin on Friday at 3 p.m. CT and Sunday at 11 a.m., respectively.
