Illini Fall to No 17. Michigan
April 6, 2014
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Fighting Illini women’s tennis team finished up their weekend on the road with a loss to No. 17 Michigan Sunday afternoon. The Wolverines dominated in both singles and doubles to sweep the Illini.
“Losing is painful,” said head coach Michelle Dasso. “Both doubles points this weekend came down to tiebreakers and they did not go our way. That is hard to swallow. Difficult times and difficult losses can break teams or make them stronger. The character of our team will show on how we rebound and finish the regular season.”
The Illini faced two ranked doubles teams from Michigan, Brooke Bolender/Emma Bektas and Sarah Lee/Amy Zhu. Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong fell to Bolender/Bektas in the No. 1 doubles slot 8-4, and Alexis Casati and Jerricka Boone were defeated in the 3 spot 8-7. Allison Falkin and Melissa Kopinski also failed to find success in doubles, falling to Yurovsky/Ucros 8-3.
In singles, Kwong was the first to go down, falling 6-0, 6-0 to UM’s Sarah Lee, followed by Allison Falkin who lost to Bektas 6-2, 6-2. Kopinski’s match against Bolender finished third, with the Illini player falling 6-3, 7-5. Casati put up a fight against Yurovsky, taking her match to a tiebreak, but ultimately fell 4-6, 7-5, 1-0. Boone and Kedzierski were the last to finish, falling 7-6, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3 respectively.
The Illini will host Iowa and Nebraska next Saturday and Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
