MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Fighting Illini wrapped up play at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, defeating Oklahoma State 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Illini had previously met No. 29 OSU at the Maui Invitational earlier this season, where they fell 3-7.

“This was another inspirational team effort,” said head coach Michelle Dasso. “Today we saw a clutch performance from freshman Louise Kwong. All three freshman had success in singles against a talented Oklahoma State squad. These were big wins outdoors for our team and our chemistry grew with each match we played this weekend. It was especially sweet to see Melissa Kopinski persevere and put a 10-point tie breaker win on the board when she has struggled with those these past few weeks. Ric and I are very proud of the fight and grittiness our team displayed this weekend.”

Rather than starting with doubles, the match jumped straight to singles, where three Illini went to tiebreakers, Kopinski and Kwong winning 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 and 2-6, 7-5, 11-9, respectively. Though she started out strong, Allison Falkin fell to her opponent in the third tiebreak of the day, 6-4, 1-6, 8-10.

Alexis Casati bounced back from her loss on Saturday to win 7-5, 6-2. Jerricka Boone kept her momentum going with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Misia Kedzierski was the third loss for the Illini, falling 3-6, 1-6.

The Illini will return to action on Sunday March 2 against Southern Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center at 4 p.m. CT.
