Illini Take Down Furman, 4-3
Feb. 3, 2013
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Fighting Illini women's tennis team (4-4) captured a 4-3 win over Furman (1-1) on Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center. Seniors Rachael White and Breanne Smutko and junior Allison Falkin won in both singles and doubles to help Illinois to its second straight victory.
"I was so incredibly happy for my players this weekend," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Capping it off with my two seniors, Rachael and Breanne, snagging gritty wins to propel the Illini to victory against a tough Furman team in 4-3 fashion was pretty awesome."
The Illini swept doubles to give themselves a 1-0 lead heading into singles action. No. 11 duo White and Kopinski finished first with an 8-2 win at the top spot, while junior tandem Misia Kedzierski and Falkin clinched the point with an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
In singles play, Falkin cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Amanda Murray on court three. The Orange and Blue could not maintain that momentum, however, stumbling on courts one and four to put the teams in a 2-2 tie.
The Illini recovered with Smutko's 6-3, 6-2 win over Margaret Boyette at the No. 5 spot, followed by White's match-clinching 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Katherine Oudin on court 2.
Illinois is now 4-0 when winning the doubles point.
The Illini will be back in action in three weeks, when they host Syracuse on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. and Oklahoma on Feb. 24 at Noon. Both matches will be held at the Atkins Tennis Center.
