Jan. 22, 2010
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 33rd-ranked Illini women's tennis team (0-1) came up just short Friday night at No. 11 Tennessee (1-0), falling 4-3 in the first dual match of the season. Three Illini claimed victories on the day including sophomore Chelcie Abajian, freshman Breanne Smutko and junior Marisa Lambropoulos.
"It always hurts to lose 4-3, but it was encouraging that we were right there with them and battled hard until the end," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Everyone competed well on all courts. It could have gone either way, but we're looking forward to another opportunity on Sunday and hope to finish the weekend on a high note."
Abajian took the first set, 6-3 before Lady Vol Natalie Pluskota defaulted due to injury to put Illinois on the scoreboard, while Smutko rallied back to defeat Rosalia Alda, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, and Lambropoulos closed out the night with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Katie Lee.
The Illini conclude their road trip on Sunday with another challenging contest against No. 26 Virginia (0-0) at 10 a.m. CT.
