MIAMI, Fla. - The 53rd-ranked University of Illinois women's tennis team concluded the first day of the Florida International Invitational on Friday. The Orange and Blue, playing for the first time since Nov. 6, went 0-4 in doubles and 2-6 in singles against No. 30 FIU. The three-day tournament is in a hidden dual format where no team score is allotted and results only count for individual records.
"All-in-all it was what I expected," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We were definitely rusty, but I was pleased with our competitiveness. It's a start and the main thing is that we are getting matches under our belt. We have even a bigger test tomorrow against Miami."
In singles the Illini got a three set victory from their senior leader Brianna Knue (Western Springs, Ill.) over FIU's Shilla D'Armas, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to improve to 8-2. Sophomore Alejandra Meza Cuadra (Lima, Peru) improved to 8-6 with a straight set defeat of FIU's Marijana Cutuk, 7-5, 6-4.
The Illini will be back on the University Park courts tomorrow against No. 10 Miami beginning with singles at 9 a.m. (CST) and doubles at 11:30 p.m.
