Smutko qualifies for main draw
Ric Mortera enters his second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Illinois women's tennis program.
As a member of the University of Oregon men's tennis team from 2006-10, Mortera led the squad in dual wins (12) his sophomore year playing mostly at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. He ranked as high as No. 45 nationally in doubles his senior year compiling 12 victories at No. 2 doubles.
Mortera graduated from Oregon in 2010 with a double-major in economics and political science and earned a minor in business administration.
In juniors, Mortera was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Jesuit High School and earned All-America honors as a senior after taking home the state singles title. Additionally, he garnered four all-state first-team accolades and as a freshman in 2002, he captured the state doubles title and helped lead Jesuit to the state team championship. During his high school career, he also attained a No. 1 ranking in the Pacific Northwest Section player ratings.
Mortera, a USTA Junior Nationals singles and doubles champion, ranked as high as No. 6 in the USTA national rankings and also was a USTA Sportsmanship award recipient.
