CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team sent eight swimmers to compete in the 2012 AT&T Winter National Championships, Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Austin, Texas. Senior Erin Rodriguez, juniors Jessica Holz and Courtney Pope, sophomore Alison Meng and freshmen Lori Lynn, Isabella Schamber, Hollie Smith and Sarah Sykstus competed in a total of 11 events over three days at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The relay team of Pope, Holz, Sykstus and Meng kicked off the contest with an 11th-place finish in the 200 free relay, clocking a time of 1:35.35.
Sykstus started the Illini off in individual competition with a 57th-place finish in the 200 IM (2:06.65), while Pope finished 56th in the 50 free (23.91). On Friday, both Lynn and Sykstus competed in the 100 fly, finishing 30th (55.38) and 54th (56.68), respectively. Lynn's time of 55.38 in the 100 fly places her third on Illinois' all-time fastest individuals list in that event and is also the sixth fastest 100 fly in school history.
The Orange and Blue wrapped up Friday with Smith finishing 58th in the 100 breast (1:05.77), while Meng and Holz secured 39th (56.05) and 67th (57.73), respectively, in the 100 back.
In the final day of competition, Holz raced to a 56th-place finish in the 200 back (2:04.11), while Pope finished in 58th in the 100 free (51.96). Rounding out the races for the Illini, Schamber came in 56th in the 200 breast (2:23.69), while Rodriguez captured 37th in the 200 fly (2:04.29). In the last event of the day, the 400 free relay team of Meng, Pope, Lynn and Holz finished in 11th place with a time of 3:27.38.
The Illini will return to action as a team on Jan. 18 to host Iowa State at the ARC Pool.
