FOR STARTERS

The Fighting Illini Swimming and Diving Team returns to action after nearly a month away from competition this weekend at the Miami (OH) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, Dec. 5-7. The Orange and Blue (5-2) will compete against seven schools including Miami (OH), Cincinnati, Denison, Ball State, Wright State, Emory and Urbana in the Nixon Aquatic Center. The invitational begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5.

COACH NOVITSKY ON THE MEET

"The Miami Invitational will provide an excellent test for the team to compete against high level competition in an invitational setting," head coach Sue Novitsky said.

"As coaches we are looking for them to be tough, courageous and maintain their focus over the three-day meet. We are looking to get as many opportunities to compete in finals as possible. That extra experience racing at night will be really valuable, but for us to get that chance we have to be exceptional in the morning. They will be racing tired and will have to get past that and still put up some great times and scores."

PREVIOUSLY AT MIAMI (OH) INVITATIONAL

This will be the first time the Illini will compete in the Miami (OH) Invitational since 2009, where they finished in fifth place out of 10 teams. The year before, in 2008, the Illini placed third out of eight teams.

LAST TIME OUT

The Illini are 5-2 overall on the season and have won four of its last five contests. This will be the first competition the Illini will face since defeating Kansas 186-114 on Nov. 9. Despite the break, the Illini will look to continue their momentum from their previous two impressive home meet performances. The Illini have claimed 25 of 28 swimming events at home this season, including sweeping all 14 swimming events against Illinois State in a 206-94 victory.

Results and recaps of each day's events will be available on fightingillini.com. Live stats of the event will also be available here.
