Illini Head to Miami Invitational
Dec. 3, 2008
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team is back on the road after a one-month hiatus to compete in the Miami Invitational. The action starts Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. and runs through Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio. The Illini are eager to dive back into the pool and extend their 4-0 winning streak. "The team is anxious to get back on the blocks and boards and compete against some outside teams," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "The Miami University Invitational is going to be a great opportunity for the team to gain experience in a championship-meet format." In their first three-day meet of the season, the Orange and Blue will be tested against Denison, Emory, Florida Gulf Coast, Marshall, Miami, Cincinnati, Oakland and Wright State. "One of our team goals is to get as many second swims as possible, so we need to be sharp in the morning prelims," Novitsky said. "Ultimately, we are looking at this meet to test the team's consistency and the ability to maintain their focus and competitiveness throughout the three days." In their last competition on Nov. 7, the Illini defeated the Illinois State Redbirds, 194-106 at Horton pool in Normal, Ill. The Orange and Blue took titles in 13 out of 16 events and set two pool records. Junior CeCe Marizu set a pool record in the 100 back (58.07), while freshman Brittany McGowan set a record in the 200 fly (2:04.88). Diver Britni Fisher took first place in both the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 269.49 and 252.82, respectively. A full recap of each day's events will be available on fightingillini.com at the conclusion of competition. Order of Events: Friday (Prelims at 9 a.m./Finals at 6 p.m.) Saturday (Prelims at 9 a.m./Finals at 6 p.m.)
