CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will travel to Normal, Ill., this weekend to take on Illinois State for the first road trip of the season this Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Illinois holds a dominating 23-6 all-time record against the Redbirds, including an impressive 12-0 mark under current head coach Sue Novitsky.
"We always have good meets with Illinois State," Novitsky said. "Many of the athletes know each other, and I think that adds to the competitiveness of the meets. I never take for granted any past success I have had against a team. I am focused on this year's meet and this one is going to be tough with a lot of good matchups along the way."
The Orange and Blue are 1-1 to start the season, coming off of a 153-147 victory over Michigan State in which the Illini claimed eight first-place finishes. Illinois State has a 1-0 record this season after defeating Evansville, 192-108.
"Last week was an excellent opportunity to continue to work and keep setting the foundation for the next few weeks and the rest of the season," Novitsky said. "As coaches, we have our season plan and keep using that as our guide throughout the season. Right now, we have to keep getting the work in, and that is our mindset -- to use the meets as an opportunity to get some fast swimming in and monitor our progress."
