CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois swimming and diving team heads to Columbia, Mo., for the second annual Mizzou Dual Meet Challenge. Action begins for the Illini with a double dual meet against Virginia Tech and Missouri State on Friday. The following day the Orange and Blue will face Drury in the first session then Missouri in the nightcap.
Competition will be tough at the challenge with Virginia Tech and Missouri tied at No. 20 in the most recent CSCAA poll. Missouri State is ranked No. 14 in collegeswimming.com's mid-major poll, while Drury is the defending NCAA Division II national champion.
"Facing successful teams gives us the opportunity to see how we stack up against strong competition," Novitsky said. "It was good to be able to stay on campus and get back on our training schedule. We tried to get the most out of the two weeks away from competition and hopefully we will see that hard work pay off this weekend."
With young talent, the Illini are working hard to keep their focus from the first event to the last event and learn to race with little rest. Competing against three teams in two days will help Orange and Blue move forward both mentally and physically.
"This season, we have only had one meet and this weekend we are going to have to have three meets in a row," Novitsky explained. "This format allows for lots of races in a short period of time, which kind of mimics prelims and finals of the Big Ten Championships. We will have to compete at a high level with little rest, so keeping our focus and energy between sessions will be crucial to our success."
