CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will host Michigan State this Friday at 4 p.m. CT at the ARC Pool. The Illini hold a 13-9 all-time record against the Spartans, including a 7-1 mark under current head coach Sue Novitsky.
"None of the meets against Michigan State have ever been easy," Novitsky said. "Our teams typically match up pretty well. This Friday could easily come down to the last relay. This is where it is important for every swimmer and diver to compete hard all the way to the end and fulfill her role because a fifth-place finish could swing the meet."
Illinois is 0-1 going into the weekend, coming off a 169-131 loss against Northwestern last week. Senior Kathleen Knight and junior Erica Lynn each captured two first-place finishes in the loss. Michigan State also enters the contest with an 0-1 record after being defeated by Iowa last Friday.
"As a team, we are looking forward to another opportunity to face some strong competition on the boards and in the pool," Novitsky said. "I am looking for individuals to keep working on staying calm and maintaining their focus in the moment. Most of all, I want to see them continue to compete with the passion that they showed last week against Northwestern."
