Oct. 23, 2008
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini go on the road this weekend to take on the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. The action begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Beyer pool. The Illini are currently 2-0 this season overall, 1-0 in the Big Ten.
"This weekend provides the team with their first opportunity to compete on the road this year," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We are looking to use this chance to get back in the groove of traveling and to give the freshman some experience on the road."
Last week Illinois defeated the Michigan State Spartans, 199-154, in a rigorous two-day meet in Champaign. Meanwhile Iowa State had the week off after defeating Nebraska-Omaha 124-72 on Oct. 11 in Ames.
"Once again there are going to be some tight match-ups all through the event list," Novitsky said. "Iowa State always has some good athletes that really get in there and compete hard and I expect this meet to be no different. We will look to focus on our details and keep the intensity up through the 16 events."
Against Michigan, freshman diver Britni Fisher achieved a NCAA Zone qualifying score in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 275.03. Senior Marissa Clapp beat the ARC pool record that she had set the week before in the 200 IM by 1.15 seconds (2:04.45). Clapp also took home event titles in the 100 breast (1:05.74), 200 breast (2:19.01) and 400 IM (4:24.46). Junior CeCe Marizu swam to the event title in the 200 back (2:03.68) and freshman Torrey Loper captured her first collegiate event title in the 100 free (10:28.93).
