The Illini will look to improve on last season's 2-8 record
Oct. 17, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will open the 2013-14 season against in-state rival Northwestern and Eastern Michigan this Friday at 5 p.m. CT in Evanston, Ill. Friday will only be the second meet where the Illini faced off against Eastern Michigan, the previous time occurring in 1987 with Illinois winning 137-78.
"The team has been working hard and they are excited to compete this Friday," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "Northwestern is a familiar foe and always provides excellent competition. Eastern Michigan has a strong team and they race tough. This meet will be a great first test for the team."
Northwestern holds a 16-7 lead in the all-time series, including a 169-131 victory over the Illini in last year's opener. This meet marks the first contest of the season for the Wildcats, who ended 2012-13 eighth in the Big Ten.
The Illini enter the weekend after a successful Orange and Blue intra-squad meet, breaking five meet records out of 12 events. Illini will hope to continue their fast start this weekend.
"It is another opportunity to see how the athletes are progressing with their training," Novitsky said. "The coaches will see how they are handling the pressure and we are looking for them to stay in the moment and step-up and compete from start to finish."
