CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois women's swimming and diving head coach Sue Novitsky announced today that Steve Farnau and Josh Seykora have been hired to the women's swimming and diving staff.
Farnau takes over as the assistant coach. The position was left vacant after Novitsky was named as the head coach in August. Farnau earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical administration/sport administration from the University of Kentucky in 1994. In 1998 he earned his master's degree in sport management from Southern Illinois University.
As the assistant women's swimming and diving coach at SIU, Farnau was the primary recruiter for the Saluki squad. During his tenure he increased the team size from 13 to 30 athletes and assisted the athletes in winning back-to-back conference championships. For the past year, Farnau has been the head coach and aquatics director for the Patriot Aquatics Swim Team at the Longwood Aquatic Club in Orlando, Fla. He also worked as a club coach while at Kentucky.
Seykora takes over as the graduate assistant diving coach for Novitsky's squad. Seykora was on the Dean's List while diving for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Iowa in 1998. Seykora is currently pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology while working toward a teaching certificate.
Seykora worked as US Diving Club Coach. Two of his former divers are competing in the Big Ten. In the fall of 1998, he coached at both Iowa City and Iowa City West High Schools. One of his divers was an Iowa State Champion. Away from the pool Seykora has worked as a phlebotomist at Wausau (Wis.) Hospital Regional Laboratories and as an exterior and interior decorator at Seykora Decorating. He also worked as a Rock Climbing Wall Instructor at the YMCA in Wausau.
