IRVINE, Calif. - Illinois senior-to-be Barbie Viney (Georgetown, Ky.) broke her second school record in as many races, finishing the 100 freestyle in 57.71 at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the William Woollett Aquatics Center. Viney's run at the national championships ends at the preliminaries, as she placed 58th with her career-best time.
"Barbie gained some great experience in long-course races at this meet," Illinois swimming and diving coach Sue Novitsky said. "Every time she swam this summer she has gotten faster, so that's a great sign for the upcoming season."
Viney broke Crystal McAdam's 100-meter free long course record set in 2002. She and the rest of the Illini swimming and diving team begin the fall semester on Aug. 23.
