CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team concluded the 2010-11 season with its annual awards banquet to honor the swimmers and divers for their performances both in the pool and in the classroom.
Sophomore Erin Lamb took home the evening's top honor, earning the Athlete of the Year title. Lamb led the Illini with eight first-place finishes on the season, including a team-high, three victories in the Michigan State-Southern Illinois tri-meet.
Senior Ann Miller received both the Allen B. Klingel Athletic Award and Academic Award for her athletic and academic achievement. Miller posted a team-leading time (2:04.81) in the 200 IM, climbing to sixth on Illinois' all-time fastest individuals list. The Columbia, Md., native also became the fifth-fastest swimmer in Illini history in the 200 fly and 400 IM. Along with her swimming accomplishments, Miller succeeded in the classroom, boasting a 3.95 grade point average.
Freshman Courtney Pope was named Newcomer of the Year for her outstanding performances throughout her rookie season. The Homer Glen, Ill., native led the Orange and Blue in the 100 and 200 free and was the team's second-fastest swimmer in the 500, 1000 and 1650 free.
Junior Britni Fisher was awarded her third-straight Outstanding Diver of the Year honor and led the divers with four first-place finishes on the season. Fisher captured a team-leading score (285.30) on the one-meter board to rank fourth in Illini history. She also qualified for the Zone C Diving Championships for the third consecutive year.
Junior Brittany McGowan received Performance of the Year accolades for her school record-breaking time (54.58) in the 100 fly at the Big Ten Championships, while sophomore diver Darragh McDermott was named Most Improved and redshirt freshman Erica Lynn took home the Fighting Illini Spirit award.
The team also honored each swimmer or diver with the highest GPA in her respective class. Freshman Andrea Baumgartner (3.97), sophomore Keri Eberhardt (3.74), junior April McKee (3.95) and Miller (3.95) each received the recognition.
