MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Race one of three is over for Illinois senior Barbie Viney, who swam the 50 free at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis on Thursday, the first day of the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Seeded 54th, Viney finished Thursday's 50 free preliminary in 57th place in 23.28 one month after she competed in Minneapolis for the Big Ten Championships.
"It was an OK swim for the first swim of the meet," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "She was pretty slow on the first 25, and that definitely hurt her, so that's one of the things we need to work on - keep focusing on executing and the details. She had a great second 25, so the speed's there. That's one thing we are working on with her is making sure she can get out fast enough, especially in the 50."
Viney is already the Illini school record-holder in the 50 free after she swam the event in a time of 22.92 at the 2005 Big Ten Championships.
The senior continues her NCAA swimming on Friday, competing in the 200 free where she is seeded 34th.
"She's disappointed about Thursday's results," Novitsky said. "I know she wanted to do better, but she got the first swim out of the way. Now we can go on and keep working on executing and putting together some good, solid races."
