CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will send 14 athletes to compete in the Minnesota Challenge this weekend in Minneapolis. The competition begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the final session at 6 p.m.
"For the swimmers attending the Minnesota Challenge, it is their opportunity to rest and race for best times at the end of the season," Illini head coach Sue Novitsky said. "For the divers, it is a chance to compete their competitive lists on both boards one more time heading into the Big Ten Championships. I expect them all to stand up and compete with focus and courage. They have put in a lot of work in the pool and in the weight room over the course of the season, and now it is time for them to recover and aim for those peak performances."
Swimmers Alexa Chavez, Cara Chuang, Andrea DeAngelis, Anne Goering, Callan McDermott, Katie Roeing, Marin Thompson, Emma Williams and Kirsten Zborek will represent the Orange and Blue in the pool, while divers Jessica Clifford, Keri Eberhardt, Emily Fung, Darragh McDermott and Erika Murphy will compete on the boards.
Goering and Callan McDermott highlighted last year's meet with fourth-place finishes in the 100 free and 200 back, respectively. Eberhardt led the divers with a fourth-place finish in the three-meter dive.
Illinois wrapped up its dual schedule last weekend at the Big Ten Quad Meet, falling to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Purdue to finish the season with a 2-7 record. The meet will mark the final competition before the Big Ten Championships, which will take place Feb. 20-23 in Minneapolis.
