Illini Prepare To Host Northwestern At IMPE Pool

Jan. 18, 2001

Champaign, Ill. - The University of Illinois swimming and diving squad will host Northwestern in the only home meet of the season on Friday, Jan 19, at IMPE Pool at 6 p.m. The Illini are 4-3 in dual meets this season, 1-2 in the Big Ten. Admission is free.

The Illini will be led by the 10 seniors on the squad who will be competing at home for the final time in their careers. Among those seniors are captains Molly Busch and Anna Christiansen. Both swimmers hold multiple school records, and Christiansen placed at the 2000 NCAA Championships. Senior Darcy Adler also has her name in the record books and national competition experience.

So far this season the entire Illinois squad has had some great races. Four swimmers have met the provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships. Christiansen met the B standard in both the 200 and 400 individual medley. Junior Jessica Aveyard has met the provisional qualifications in both the 200 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. A couple of underclassmen have also raced well this season. Sophomore Astrid Matthias met the B standard in the 100 butterfly, and freshman Crystal McAdam has provisionally qualified in the 200 freestyle.

The Illini have been swimming well as a team this season also. Illinois won the 12-team Miami (Ohio) Invitational in early December. During the winter training trip in Hawaii, the Illini raced their way to a 124-119 victory over conference foe Michigan State.
