Illini Go 1-2 at Big Ten Quad - 1/30/99

The University of Illinois swimming and diving team defeated Purdue University, 189-163, and fell to the University of Wisconsin (172-184) and the University of Minnesota (118-227) this weekend at the Big Ten Quad Meet being held in Indianapolis, Ind. Illinois' record is now 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten.

Sophomore Darcy Adler continued her winning streak in the 100 breaststroke, taking the event in a time of 1:04.43. Her time ranks the fastest for the team this season and puts her in a position to break her school record of 1:03.59 at the Big Ten Championships. Adler has now won eight-straight 100 breaststroke races dating back to Nov. 6, 1998 at the Dual Meet Extravaganza. Adler also finished third in the 200 breast in a time of 2:23.61.

Senior Nicola Homenock also had a solid meet, finishing second in the 500 free (4:58.12), and third in both the 200 IM (2:07.25) and 400 IM (4:27.76).

Junior Emily Wang joined Adler in the winners circle, taking the 200 free in a season-best time of 1:51.57. Wang was also third in the 100 free in a time of 52.23.

Other top finishes included the 200 medley relay (3rd/1:47.73), Traci Bollinger in the 50 free (3rd/24.18), Kathy Kielty in the 200 back (3rd/2:05.67), the 800 free relay (3rd/7:30.92), the 200 free relay (3rd/1:37.09) and the 400 free relay (2nd/3:27.95).

Illinois returns to competition Feb. 18-20 at the Big Ten Championships. This year's meet is being held in Minneapolis, Minn., on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
