- 11/20/98

The University of Illinois swimming and diving team defeated Oakland University, 136-102, this afternoon in Rochester, Mich. With the win, Illinois improves to 5-3 overall on the season.

The Illini won in dominating fashion, sweeping all but one swimming event to recover from being swept in the two diving events. Sophomore Anna Christiansen was a doublewinner for the Illini, winning the 200 free (1:53.72) and the 400 IM (4:31.44). Other Illini wins came from the 400 medley relay (Kathy Kielty, Darcy Adler, Nicola Homenock, Emily Wang/3:55.30), freshman Jen Peters in the 1650 free (17:06.35), Wang in the 50 free (24.49), Natasha Messmer in the 100 fly (59.28), Betsy Nagel in the 100 free (54.13), Homenock in the 500 free (5:04.10), Adler in the 100 breast (1:05.41) and the 400 free relay (Traci Bollinger, Peters, Kelly Handel and Jessica Aveyard/3:43.51).

"We had some real nice swims tonight," Illini Head Coach Jim Lutz said. "Jen Peters had an excellent 1650, and Darcy may have had the swim of the meet in her breaststroke. I'm pleased with what I saw and am glad to see that we're starting to show some signs of speed. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow morning and be a little sharper against Michigan State."

Illinois turns around Saturday morning to swim a dual meet against Michigan State at 9:30 a.m. The meet will take place prior to the Illinois/MSU football game adjacent to the Spartan pool.
