Illini Split Day Two of Extravaganza
The University of Illinois swimming and diving team (2-3/0-2) split the second day of the Illinois Dual Meet Extravaganza today at the IMPE Pool. In the morning, Illinois fell to Missouri, 82-66, but bounced back in the evening session to defeat Illinois State, 85-66.
Illinois defeated the Redbirds behind five individual event winners and a 400 free relay victory. Senior Nicola Homenock wasted no time in getting the team off to a quick start after the morning defeat with a win in the 400 IM (4:28.02), the first event of the evening meet. Traci Bollinger followed that up with a win in event two, the 100 free (53.13), and teammates Darcy Adler (50 breast/30.33), Molly Busch (50 fly/26.89) and Jessica Aveyard (1650 free/17:40.12) followed those wins up with victories of their own.
"We came back and swam more focused this evening," Illini Head Coach Jim Lutz said. "We had to get tougher in order to win, and our swimmers are learning how to stand up and race when tired."
It wasn't the same story in the morning as an Illini squad that was without two of its top swimmers for the majority of the meet (Emily Wang/illness, Nicola Homenock/graduate school entrance exam), lost to Missouri, 82-66.
There were some individual highlights against Missouri. The 200 medley relay team of Bollinger, Darcy Adler, Natasha Messmer and Wang won in 1:48.59 to start the meet on the right track. Freshman Kathy Kielty also continued to have a strong weekend, taking the 200 back in 2:05.97. Messmer was the final individual event winner for Illinois, taking the 200 butterfly in 2:07.39 after winning the 100 fly a day ago.
"We were a little flat in the morning and we got outraced," Lutz said. "Missouri was fundamentally better and they were better to the wall. The team knew they let an opportunity slip away, but we just weren't sharp enough to get the job done."
Action at IMPE Pool wraps up Sunday with a pair of double duals. At 10:00 a.m., the team of Illinois (women) and Iowa (men) take on Indiana (men and women) and Cincinnati (men and women.) At noon, Illinois State (women) and Drury (men) go against both Missouri (men and women) and Southern Illinois (men and women).
