Illini Defeat SIU, 145-41
The University of Illinois swimming and diving team defeated Southern Illinois University, 145-41, this evening in the first day of the Illinois Dual Meet Extravaganza. On the men's side, Illinois' partner school, Iowa, also defeated the Salukis, 104-82.
Eight individual Illini won all eight individual events while Illinois also swept the two relays. The strongest individual showing came from junior Natasha Messmer, who swam a personal best time in winning the 100 fly (57.79) by over two seconds. Other individual winners included Nicola Homenock in the 200 free (1:53.21), Anna Christiansen in the 200 IM (2:07.16), Colleen Farrell in the 50 free (25.04), Betsy Nagel in the 100 back (1:00.27), Jodi Smith in the 100 breast (1:06.05), Emily Wang in the 100 free (53.35) and freshman Erin Prasse in 1m diving (195.80).
Illinois' 200 free relay team of Wang, Farrell, Nagel and Molly Busch were victorious in a time of 1:37.71 and the 400 medley relay team (Kathy Kielty, Smith, Homenock and Marcie Black) notched a win with a time of 3:54.45.
"I think we put out some really nice swims tonight, we had a really nice showing," Illini Head Coach Jim Lutz said. "We had good racing across the board and you can tell that we are starting to learn more and improve as we get more opportunities to race. Our younger swimmers are starting to grow up."
In other action today, the Cincinnati women defeated Illinois State, 121-65 and Drury College defeated Cincinnati, 107-76, on the men's side. In the second of the three meets, Missouri's women defeated Indiana, 96-89 and Missouri's men also beat Indiana, 106-78.
Action at the Dual Meet Extravaganza being held at the IMPE Pool continues all day Saturday and Sunday.
