TOLEDO, Ohio - In a close battle to the end, the Fighting Illini swimming and diving team came away with a 153-147 victory over defending MAC Champion Toledo Friday night at the UT Student Recreation Center. With the win, the Illini improve to 2-0 on the year and will close out the road trip Saturday afternoon at Akron.

"We only won six of the events, but our depth really helped us throughout the meet," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We were able to take advantage of our wins and keep the meet close. It came down to the last couple events and we knew what we had to do. Our divers were huge for us today and helped us close out the meet against a very tough Toledo team. Our 400 free relay did a tremendous job. It was a great way to end the meet and seal the deal."

In the final event of the night, the 400 free relay, the Illini team of senior Meghan Mason, junior Caitlin Conroy, sophomore Erin Lamb and freshman Courtney Pope clinched the victory with a first-place time of 3:32.65.

Freshman Cara Chuang continued the strong start to her collegiate career with a first-place finish in the 100 back (57.67) and took second in the 200 back (2:05.19), while junior Brittany McGowan placed first in the 200 fly (2:05.90) and third in the 100 fly (57.19) and Lamb finished first in the 50 free (24.46), second in the 100 free (52.37) and 200 free (1:52.92) and third in the 100 fly (57.19).

Freshman Jessica Holz and senior Ann Miller also got in on the action, posting top-three finishes in multiple events. Holz captured second in the 100 back (59.31) and third in the 200 back (2:06.64), while Miller finished third in three events -- the 200 fly (2:08.30), 200 breast (2:26.67) and 200 IM (2:09.82).

Junior Kristen Manias claimed second in the 50 free (24.60), while senior Corey Kasten finished second in the 100 breast (1:05.32), sophomore Kimberly Kalenda placed third in the 50 free (24.74), junior April McKee claimed third in the 100 breast (1:07.23) and Mason took third in the 100 free (52.91).

On the boards, junior Britni Fisher led the Illini with first-place finishes in both the one-meter (238.725) and three-meter (245.925) dives, while sophomore Tessa Adams finished second in both events, posting a score of 229.95 in the one-meter and 232.275 in the three-meter.
