CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illini swimming and diving team started off the 2012-13 season with its annual Orange and Blue exhibition Saturday at the ARC Pool. The Orange narrowly defeated the Blue, 113-110, with each team taking six of the 12 events.

"It's a practice meet for us, so it's an opportunity to get to see them compete a little bit differently than in normal practice," Illini head coach Sue Novitsky said. "It's always good to see them handle a little bit of adversity and to see how they are able to perform when they are a little tired. I thought overall, we did well. Kathleen Knight set a meet record in the 100 fly so it was good to see her step up and perform because she's been training really well."

Sophomore Alison Meng, junior Erica Lynn, freshman Sarah Sykstus and senior Kimberly Kalenda teamed up to win the 200 medley relay for the Orange with a time of 1:49.27. Other first-place finishers for the Orange were Kalenda in the 50 free (24.75) and senior Darragh McDermott in the one-meter dive (203.77), as well as Erica Lynn in the 100 breast (1:07.61) and sophomore Megan Marchuk in the 200 free (1:55.82). The team of Meng, senior Erin Lamb, Marchuk and Kalenda also added a win in the 400 free relay (3:33.60).

The Blue Team captured six first-place finishes of its own, led by senior Kathleen Knight, who won the 100 fly with a time of 57.79, breaking the meet record. Additional first-place finishers for the Blue were freshman Lori Lynn in both the 200 IM (2:08.43) and 100 back (59.33), junior Courtney Pope in the 100 free (53.31), sophomore Hailey Booth in the 500 free (5:10.35) and senior Keri Eberhardt in the three-meter dive (212.32).

"Today is going to help me set my lineups for Friday's meet against Northwestern," Novitsky said. "It's the beginning of the season and we still have a lot of work to do, but they are coming along well. We just need to keep cleaning some things up and work on staying calm in the moment."

The Illini will open the regular season against the Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. CT at the ARC Pool. Admission is free.
