Billy McGowan begins his third season at Illinois as diving coach. McGowan saw two diving records fall in his first season, as senior diver Lisa Fish set the 1-meter and 3-meter standard for an Illini diver.
Before his tenure at Illinois, McGowan spent the past three seasons at Stony Brook University where he coached six ECAC qualifiers and four National qualifiers.
Since 2002, McGowan also coached the North Shore Diving Club team and has served as a Junior Diving Chairman for the Southern New York Diving Association. Through both of these programs he has been very active in promoting and mentoring to US Junior Diving participants in the Northeast. In addition, he helped create educational video libraries and set up coaching clinics for the association.
He spent 2000-2001 at Fordham University as the assistant Diving Coach.
As a diver, McGowan was a 1993 NCAA Division III qualifier and All-American. In 2002, he was a gold medalist in the 3-meter at the Empire State Games.
McGowan is a 1997 graduate of Purchase College, State University of NY, where he earned a bachelor's degree in photography. In 2003, while entertaining his coaching duties he earned a master's degree in physical education from Stony Brook University. During the spring semesters of 1992 and 1996 he enrolled in international studies in London, England.
