Steve Farnau served 13 seasons at the University of Illinois as the associate head coach. Farnau served as the primary recruiting coordinator in addition to fulfilling his on-deck coaching duties as the sprint coach. Farnau oversaw the training of honorable mention All-American Barbie Viney, NCAA- and school-record holders Christina Brunka, Meghan Farrell and Becca Poetz, as well as school-record holders Ashley Braun and Astrid Matthias.
Prior to coming to Illinois, Farnau was the head coach and aquatics director for the Patriot Aquatics Swim Team at the Longwood Aquatic Club in Orlando, Fla., where he designed and oversaw daily workouts for senior and age-group swimmers.
Before that, Farnau was the assistant women's swimming and diving coach at Southern Illinois University from 1996-99. Farnau was the primary recruiter for the Saluki squad, guiding them to back-to-back conference championships.
Farnau began his coaching career while at Kentucky. From 1990-96, he was the head age-group coach for Wildcat Aquatics, directing a squad of more than 150 athletes.
Farnau swam at Georgia from 1988-90 and later earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education/sport administration from Kentucky in 1994. In 1998, he earned his master's degree in sport management from Southern Illinois University.
