Sept. 24, 2010
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois women's softball team opened its home fall schedule with a shutout, 7-0, of visiting Parkland Community College. Hollie Pinchback, Meredith Hackett and Jackie Guy each had multi-hit games for the Illini.
Illinois opened scoring in the first frame, plating three runners. Hackett walked to follow a Pinchback double and put runners on first and second. Running for Pinchback, freshman Alex Booker scored on a single by Guy to put the Illini on the board, 1-0, with runners again on first and second. A passed ball moved the Illini on base to second and third before an error by Parkland's first baseman plated both to push Illinois ahead, 3-0.
The Orange and Blue struck for two runs each in the fifth and sixth to reach the final score. During the fifth inning, Illinois scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to Kelley Wedel. In the following inning, Pinchback led off with a single before Hackett homered to left field, her first of the spring, to put the Illini ahead, 7-0.
Gay logged four innings in the circle before Guy relieved her to finish the contest. Through her four frames, Gay allowed two hits and struck out six. Guy only allowed one Parkland batter to reach on a hit-by-pitch through three innings of work while striking out four.
Illinois (3-0) returns to action on Eichelberger Field on Sunday, Sept. 26 with a 1 p.m. contest against Heartland.
