URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois softball team will open the fall season this weekend at the Chicagoland Fall Classic in Orland Park, Ill. After the Illini's game last weekend was canceled due to inclement weather, the Orange and Blue will take to the field for the first time against Valparaiso on Friday at 7 p.m. and complete the doubleheader against Olivet Nazarene at 9 p.m.
"The team is really excited to play ball and have a different opponent besides themselves," head coach Terri Sullivan said. "They've been working really hard, so the real benefit is to have a game against a quality opponent. "
Illinois has participated in the Chicagoland Fall Classic since the program began in 2000. The Orange and Blue will participate in the three-day event along with 26 other schools. The Illini will complete the weekend with another doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 15, facing DePaul at noon and the University of Northern Iowa at 2 p.m.
Illinois will return to Eichelberger Field at Martin Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21, hosting Parkland College at 6 p.m. The Illini finish the fall season on Saturday, Sept. 22 when the alumni come home to take on the current Orange and Blue squad at 1 p.m.
