AUSTIN, Texas - Illinois softball incoming freshman Katie Repole secured the second University Interscholastic League (UIL) Texas State Championship of the Smithson Valley senior's scholastic career recently, with a 9-8 victory over Montgomery High School on McCombs Field in Austin, Texas, to earn the Class 4A crown.
Once in Austin for the semifinal and championship rounds of the tournament, Smithson Valley topped Waco Midway, 11-9 to secure their spot in the finale. Repole, who tallied a two-run homer as part of a three-hit game to secure the Region IV Championship against New Braunfels Canyon, totaled Ford Built Tough Player of the Game honors during the semifinal contest against the Panthers.
Smithson Valley, which finished 30-6 overall on the season, went undefeated during their championship run to wrap up the memorable 2012 campaign on a 15-game winning streak. During the playoffs prior to reaching the UIL Final Four, Smithson Valley downed Boerne Champion, Marble Falls, Lockhart and New Braunfels Canyon during individual games and Alice twice to outscore the opposition, 60-17 according to the UIL.
Repole also won a state title with Smithson Valley during the 2009 season, when the then-freshman hit .456 with 36 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and five home runs over the course of the year.
