URBANA, Ill. - The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Illini softball program invites all fans of the Orange and Blue to celebrate World's Largest Softball Tailgate IX at Eichelberger Field on Saturday, May 5. Like It To See It Live Band Battle winner Jason & The Haymakers will provide live music for all tailgating fans, while the Illini look to carry momentum from their series win at No. 22 Michigan into the doubleheader with Penn State. Admission and parking for the ninth edition of World's Largest Softball Tailgate will be free of charge.
"World's Largest Softball Tailgate is something that our players past, present and future, our coaches and our fans look forward to every year," Illinois head coach Terri Sullivan said. "It is our premier event and former softball player [and Marketing Coordinator] Brooke Buzard has put together something for everyone. There is nothing like this anywhere in the country from a softball standpoint and we look forward to an awesome week where everyone can enjoy Big Ten softball."
Presented by FOX 55/27 Illinois, World's Largest Softball Tailgate IX offers fans the opportunity to enjoy their favorite tailgating activities in conjunction with an Illini spring sporting event. This year, country music favorite Jason & The Haymakers, which has shared the stage with the likes of Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Eric Church, Clint Black and Kid Rock, will play for all in the tailgating lots beginning at approximately 11 a.m. CT. More information on Jason & The Haymakers can be found on their official website here.
"World's Largest Softball Tailgate brings the Illinois softball community together in the best way possible," senior third baseman Kelley Wedel said. "The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics works so hard all year long to put this event on, it always turns out great and it's awesome having our home fans out there supporting us no matter the circumstance. Being a senior, it means even more to me because I have been a part of three tailgates so far and I will never have this experience as a player again."
Face painting and inflatable rides and games will be available prior to the contests, while the first 150 fans to enter the stadium will receive a free World's Largest Softball Tailgate t-shirt courtesy of the On-Deck Circle, the Illini softball booster club.
