URBANA, Ill. - Senior designated player Katrina Ross was named Big Ten Player of the Week after slugging 1.500, while batting .500 and driving in five runs during Illinois' sweep of No. 11/7 Northwestern over the weekend. It marks the first weekly honor of Ross' career.
Ross came through in a big way in the first game of the series, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a walk-off two-run home run that gave the Illini a 10-8 victory. The Graham, Wash., knocked one out of the park again on Sunday and collected two more RBIs on the day. The sweep of Northwestern marked the first for the Orange and Blue over the Wildcats since 2001.
Ross' honor is the fifth this season for the Orange and Blue, the most in program history. Second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz has earned it twice, while catcher Lana Armstrong and leftfielder Hollie Pinchback each took home the award once.
Ross and the Illini hit the road on Wednesday, April, 29, for a doubleheader against Purdue. The first game from West Lafayette, Ind., will begin at 2 p.m. (CT) with the second immediately following.
