PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Illinois Softball redshirt sophomore Jessica Davis earned her first Big Ten Player of the Week honor on Monday following a 4-for-5 performance with four home runs in two games at Ohio State. Against the Buckeyes, Davis finished with eight RBIs, six runs scored and an on-base percentage of .875 following three walks. Davis produced an outstanding 3.2000 slugging percentage in Columbus, Ohio, as Illinois finished the weekend tied for first with Michigan in the Big Ten with a 5-1 conference record.
In game one against the Buckeyes, Davis tallied a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the third as the Illini downed Ohio State, 8-0, in five innings. Davis accounted for five RBIs and two runs scored while also reaching base via a walk during the contest.
The Zephyrhills, Fla., native followed Saturday's performance with two more homers on Sunday as the Illini played live on the Big Ten Network for the first time in 2011. Yet again Davis produced a two-run home run in the first inning while her solo homer in the third put Illinois ahead, 4-1, at the time. Davis scored a career-best four runs as the Orange and Blue earned the second mercy-rule shortened victory of the weekend, needing only six innings to tally the win, 13-4.
In addition to her dominance at Ohio State, Davis tallied a single and a double to finish 2-for-4 against Illinois State on Wednesday, April 6. Including her work against the Redbirds, Davis totaled a .667 batting average for the week with six hits in nine at bats - earning a weekly slugging percentage of 2.111 in the process.
Davis is the first Illini to receive Big Ten weekly honors in 2011. Hope Howell earned Illinois' most recent Big Ten Player of the Week award, taking home the honor on May 17, 2010. Davis shares the current weekly award with Michigan's Amanda Chidester.Bielfeldt Athletic Administration Building
