URBANA, Ill. - Senior catcher Lana Armstrong was named the Big Ten Player of the Week after leading Illinois to a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Marriott Houston Invitational, including wins over No. 18/21 Houston and No. 19/24 Texas A&M. Armstrong slugged 1.286, batted .571 with 10 RBIs and three home runs during the stretch.
Armstrong made herself at home against the teams from her native state. She went 2-for-3 against the Cougars, belting her first home run of the season and collecting two RBIs. Against the Aggies, the Rowlett, Texas, native drove in the first two runs of the game with a double then added two more runs on her third homer of the weekend. Armstrong also was a wall behind the plate, catching a no-hitter against Prairie View A&M and a one-hitter against Northern Illinois.
It marks the second time this season an Illini has earned the weekly honor, as Armstrong joins second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz, who won it the first weekend. It also marks the second weekly laurel of Armstrong's career.
Armstrong and the Illini (10-4) continue action this weekend at the Cox Communications Invitational hosted by the University of Florida. Illinois opens the tournament on Friday, Feb. 27 against Texas Tech at 8 a.m. (CT).
