URBANA, Ill. - Illinois softball got off to a fast start to its fall season, crushing Lakeland 10-0 on Friday at Eichelberger Field. The Illini were boosted offensively by second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz and designated player Audrey Gallien, as Zymkowitz was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Gallien was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Eight of Illinois' runs were scored with two outs in the second inning, started by three runners scoring after a single by Zymkowitz and a Lakeland error. Hope Howell made the score 5-0 in favor of Illinois, doubling to hit in Zymkowitz and then scoring on another Lakeland error. Kelley Wedel next tripled down the right field line to hit in Hollie Pinchback, setting up Gallien's two-run homer.
Monica Perry pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts to get the win. Illinois used five different pitchers in the game, with freshman Pepper Gay pitching two innings, striking out three and giving up two hits. In total, three freshmen made their Illini debuts, with Jackie Guy pitching one inning and Stephanie Cuevas getting one at-bat at catcher.
The Orange and Blue take the field again on Sunday, hosting Kankakee at 1 p.m. at Eichelberger Field.
