Waco, Texas - Baylor pounded out 10 hits in a 5-0 victory over Illinois in a winner's bracket game at the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament Friday afternoon. The Illini will meet Houston, a 1-0 winner against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Baylor scored two runs in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth against three Illinois pitchers. A pair of infield singles and a walk loaded the bases for Baylor in the second. Kelly Levesque and Harmony Schwethelm each swung at the first pitch from Amanda Fortune and delivered hard-hit run-scoring singles to make it 2-0 Baylor.
Levesque and Kelly Wilmouth each singled in the Baylor third with Wilmouth scoring on a ground out to make it 3-0.
The Illini did have several chances early in the game against Baylor's Cristin Vitek, who set an NCAA record by striking out 28 in a 1-0, 16-inning win over North Carolina on Thursday. LeeAnn Butcher singled to left field to start the Illinois first inning, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, but was left stranded. Erin Montgomery singled and Illinois had runners at second and third in the second inning, but the Illini couldn't get the clutch hit. The Illini also had two runners on in the third as well.
Lisa Ferguson relieved Vitek in the second inning and pitched the rest of the game to improve to 16-6 on the season. Illinois had just one base runner after the third inning.
Baylor added two more runs in the fifth off reliever Sherri Taylor, highlighted by an RBI double from Stephanie Pomes.
