Kelley Wedel hit a home run to help the Illini sweep the Spartans.

EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Illini took home the sweep over Michigan State today with a 5-0 win improving their record to 37-5 overall, 10-2 Big Ten. Freshman Pepper Gay struck out eight Spartan batters and allowed only 4 hits. Third baseman Kelley Wedel came out strong hitting going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
"Sometimes you take for granted what a sweep is, but it's a big accomplishment to get a sweep against any team in the Big Ten, assistant coach Katie O'Connell said. "It's always tough to play on the road too, so that is another positive about this win."
Wedel got things going in the second inning with a double to left field that advanced catcher Audrey Gallien to third base. Designated player Katie Lutes was walked, loading the bases for the Illini. Shortstop Danielle Vaji stepped up to the plate with a double up the middle to bring in Wedel and Gallien, Lutes came home off of an error by Michigan State making the score 3-0 for the Illini.
Wedel stepped up to the plate again in the fourth inning and sent a home run to left field upping the score to 4-0. Vaji walked, and second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz hit a single, advancing Vaji to second. Left Fielder Hope Howell followed up with a double to bring Vaji home for the 5-0 lead. Vaji went 1-for-2 at the plate with a run and two RBIs.
The No. 18 Illini prepare to host the Iowa Hawkeyes for a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 5 at 5 and 7 p.m. at Eichelberger Field at Martin Softball Complex in Urbana, Ill. Fans can join Illinois Softball for a Cinco de Mayo celebration with an afternoon of festivities. Admission to the field is free with a University of Illinois student ID.
