State College, Pa. - Penn State scored in the first three innings en route to a 4-1 victory over Illinois. The Nittany Lions improve to 26-14 overall, 4-3 in the Big Ten while the Illini fall to 18-21 overall, 0-9 in the Big Ten.
Jen Acunto led off the Penn State first with a solo home run to dead center field. The Lions scored a run on two hits in the second inning. Leigh Murray walked and Jenn Reynolds and Destine Chavez singled, the latter scoring Murray. After Chavez advanced to second on the throw home, Penn State had runners at second and third with no outs. Jenna Hall made a great play on a suicide squeeze attempt, flipping to the catcher Julie Balicki to help halt the rally. DeVreese got the next two batters to ground out to keep the score at 2-0.
Two Illinois errors led to two more PSU runs in the third. Penn State had runners on in five of the seven innings and left seven runners on base. Illini starter Claire DeVreese struck out four and scattered six hits. Only two of the four runs she gave up were earned.
Penn State starter Missy Beseres stymied Illinois most of the day, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out nine. Until the sixth Julie Balicki (2-for-3) had the only two Illini hits, a double down the right field line in the second and a single in the fourth. Illinois' Molly Lawhead had a quality at-bat with one out in the sixth, fouling off several pitches before singling up the middle. She advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Shanna Diller's single to center for the lone Illinois run.
Rachelle Coriddi, who ranks third in the Big Ten in the stolen bases, was thrown out for just the second time on the season in the first inning. Coriddi is now 18 for 20 on the season in stolen bases.
