Evanston, Ill. - The ebb and flow of the 2005 Illinois softball season continues to demonstrate both ends of the spectrum. On the upside have been wins over two ranked teams, a ten-run victory over another traditional national contender, and an offense that had been averaging nearly five runs per game. Friday was another one of those at the lower end of the spectrum, however. Northwestern hurler Eileen Canney tossed a five-inning perfect game as the No. 23 Wildcats blanked the Illini 10-0 in the Big Ten opener in Evanston.

Canney struck out four while her teammates banged out eight hits and Illini fielders committed four errors. Northwestern scored six unearned runs in the second inning and four runs in the fourth to improve to 19-9 overall. The Illini fall to 15-12 overall. The two teams meet again on Saturday at Noon. For the Wildcats Jamie Dotson was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Kelly Odell, making her first Wildcat start, had two RBI.
